The Beginning of the Church: Acts

Through this 10-part series, we will look at the origins of the Christian church. Without Jesus in their midst, the apostles felt lost and helpless. Secluded in an upper room, they huddled together and did the one thing they knew—they prayed, and the Holy Spirit moved among them, causing them to live in a way that shook up the world around them. With so many issues tugging at our hearts and minds every day, it is vital that we never forget this basic truth: we are the church and we have a purpose. When people pray and the power of the Holy Spirit is poured out, lives are changed. This study will help us understand just what that means.

Living and Loving

Bound by laws governing every aspect of their lives, the Jewish believer knew what to do, when to do it and how much to give. The early church, moved by Jesus’ example of sacrificial living, breaks these chains of rules to find the rule of the heart love deeply, share boldly and give generously.

“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. All the believers were one in heart and mind…and there was no needy person among them.” Acts 5:31,32

keep Your Eye on the Ball

No matter how much people care about each other, conflicts are bound to happen. As the apostles focused on sharing the word deeply, others forgot about the importance of sharing the food evenly! Selfishness and jealousy broke out, threatening to tear apart the close-knit Christian community. The Holy Spirit steps in again to provide wisdom and peace in the middle of the conflict.

“choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them.” Acts 6:4

Love Means Saying…?

After the death of Jesus, Stephen becomes the first martyr for the cause of Christ, being stoned for the words he spoke. We'll look at the power that anger has to destroy us and forgiveness has to save us.

“When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God.” Acts 7:54

A World Turned Upside-Down

Saul stood as a witness to Stephen’s death. Now, as he races to Damascus to seek the destruction of the disciples there, he comes face to face with the very Lord he claims to serve. What happens when we’re faced with the truth about the things we believe, and it threatens to upset all we rely on?

“He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’” Acts 9:4
